New Churches in Montgomery and Chicago

New Churches in the Anglican Mission

The Anglican Mission in The Americas is proving to be a home for mission-minded congregations, regardless of worship style. That is particularly evident in two new churches just affiliated with the AMiA. The Legacy Anglican Church in Montgomery, Alabama is a congregation that is liturgically free and contemporary, while All Souls Anglican Fellowship in Wheaton , Illinois is more ‘high church’ and historic in its approach. But both churches are growing quickly and have a passion for outreach, discipleship, service and evangelism.

Legacy Anglican Church was formed from a nucleus of people from Christ the Redeemer Episcopal Church in Montgomery, where Legacy’s pastor, the Rev. Doug McCurry, served as Rector. “For two years I had been exploring options as I felt called to establish a new congregation in Montgomery,” offered Rev. McCurry. “I strongly felt God calling me to join the Anglican Mission and to lead a church that would reach out specifically to the un-churched in our area.”

The new church is already attracting around 125 worshipers each week to the services that are informal. “We’re Anglicans, but our worship style is contemporary and informal—open to the gifts of the Spirit,” observed McCurry.

Legacy Anglican Church will begin worshiping at a new location as of Palm Sunday—Trinity School on East Trinity Boulevard.

Far north of Montgomery in the Chicago area, a group of fifteen people began to meet together in late Spring of last year and discern the possibility of a new congregation. The church that was established is now drawing between 150 and 200 each week to worship that is decidedly ‘high church’ , with music more Elizabethan than contemporary. All Souls Anglican Fellowship is an orthodox, evangelical and liturgical congregation carrying out its mission in a city synonymous with the evangelical mainstream.

All Soul’s Rector, the Rev. Martin Johnson, explains the breadth of the church’s approach, “We neglect no era of Christian worship. Our theology—which matters more than our worship preference—is thoroughly grounded in the great Reformation of the English church, and we root ourselves in Scripture.” Rev. Johnson explains that All Souls is very alive with the presence of the Holy Spirit, expressed in their worship-centered community. “We have been greatly blessed in that, from the very beginning of our time together, we have had not only Sunday morning worship, but also Sunday School for all ages, a Thursday evening program for all ages, and various other ministries. Our great desire is to direct people not to ourselves, nor to our church, but to Jesus Christ. He is the center of our vision. He is the object of our witness.”

All Souls is currently worshiping on Sunday mornings and Thursday evenings at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on South Blanchard Street in Wheaton.
