A team from Church of the Holy Spirit and CHS-Orchard Hills recently returned from a mission trip to the Philippines. We have partnered with a group of indigenous pastors for many years and have supported a pastor's training school and numerous pastors who have been sent forth to plant churches. To date, 29 churches have been planted and more are in the works. The primary focus of this trip was to encourage the outreach ministry to the Island of Fuga which is located off the northern coast and void of any of the modern conveniences such as electricity, running water, plumbing, motor vehicles, stores, doctors, etc. Even the Filipinos on the main island are not willing to travel to Fuga due to the danger of crossing the rough seas in small, open boats which are stabilized by bamboo outriggers. Once there, the lack of essential supplies, such as food, clothing, housing and medical care are further deterrents.
Fortunately, we joined with a few of the Filipino pastors to take medicine, eye glasses and the Gospel to five of the seven villages on the island. The people were very responsive on all fronts and we are thankful that two of the pastors committed to stay on the island to minister to the people. It is our hope that we can repair the only existing church which has been ravaged by Typhoons and build another in a neighboring village. The cost will only be $5,000 - $6,000. Additionally, we hope to take more teams in the future. Doctors are desperately needed but we found that even those of us who do not have any tangible skills proved to be such an encouragement to the people who often feel forgotten and abandoned.
