Kigali Episcopal Theological College Update

The Anglican Province of Rwanda has never had a seminary...until now. Kigali Episcopal Theological College (KETC) is the new seminary for the Rwandan Church, financed in large part through the financial support of the Anglican Mission in The Americas. Situated in a former banana plantation roughly 10 miles east of Kigali, the seminary is located in what was formerly a primary staging area for the Interahamwe—the perpetrators of the genocide in 1994. With classes scheduled to begin next February, the land is being redeemed as a new staging area for the Kingdom of God in Rwanda.

Construction Progress

Construction of the two story academic building of KETC is progressing steadily, with as many as 100 workers laboring on site each day. Most of what remains to be done is electrical, finish carpentry, and painting. The academic building includes 6 classrooms with seating for as many as 50 students each, a spacious library, smaller conference rooms, and offices for the faculty and administration. Until residence halls are built, two of the classrooms will be used as dormitories for the students.

Construction on the refectory is moving a little more slowly. Inside are a kitchen, large dining room, food storage, and an atrium. This building is scheduled to be finished later this fall. With the completion of the refectory, phase one for the construction of KETC will be done, and classes will begin immediately.

Principal Appointed

The Rev. Dick Seed has been appointed Principal of KETC and professor of Bible and theology. (The Principal is the senior administrative position. Dr. Paula Sage continues to serve as Academic Dean.) His wife, Mrs. Caroline Seed, has also joined the faculty as a professor of missiology and administrator of the college library. The Seeds served most recently in the Anglican Province of Nigeria, where Dick was Academic Dean at St. Francis' College in Wusasa. Their children, Richard, Helen and Craig, are all studying in Europe. The Seeds are supported in part through a grant from the Church Missionary Society in England. They are originally from South Africa, where they served as church planters in the Church of England in South Africa (CESA).

Dick Seed is a great choice for Principal for several reasons. He loves the Bible. His doctoral studies have been focused on how Christians in the global South read and understand biblical narratives. He loves mission, having spent all of his career in church planting or mission work. He loves Africa. Dick is a South African by birth, with a love for the peoples and customs of his native continent. He loves the church. Dick is passionate about the growth of the church around the world, in both size and spiritual maturity. He is an evangelical churchman in the tradition of Ryle and Packer. He loves the Lord. He is a disciple of Jesus, and he shares his heart for God freely with those whom he meets. In short, Dick is the right man to lead KETC. Thanks be to God!

Did I mention that the Seeds also brew the best coffee in Rwanda?

Immediate Needs for Opening in February

--KETC faces the same problems common to all of Rwanda. While they do have electricity to the site, getting water to the facilities is going to be a significant challenge.

--A professor of New Testament is needed to join the faculty prior to the start of classes in 2006.

--Annual tuition for each of the 18-20 students starting in February will be $1000.

--Hundreds of specific titles are still needed for the library.
