New Around the Mission
Seeing the City with the Eyes of God
February 27, 2011
Hope Mission Church in Austin, Texas is joining with hundreds of churches to participate in the Austin Bridge Builders Alliance (ABBA) three-week sermon series focused on: “A God for the City,” “A Church for the City” and “A Christian for the City” written by three local pastors. All churches choose a schedule that fits their congregation, with the finish line slated for Easter.
ABBA, is a non-profit organization whose mission is “to connect the greater Austin Church community and its resources to the needs of the city and region.” Based on Jer. 29:7, the ecumenical initiative leaders believe that as the church community unites around a compelling and clear mission, they become the greatest resource for change and good in the city.

Rick Bowman and the Rev. Perry Koon
“Even though we are a small church plant in a city of more than 800,000 people, as we join this effort, we see ourselves as part of the bigger mission of God in the city,” notes the Rev. Perry Koon, Lead Pastor at Hope Mission, a congregation in theAM. “It is a great encouragement to me personally and to our members.”
Koon reports that the initiative creates a camaraderie and collaborative spirit among church leaders in the community. “Knowing that all the pastors work, play, struggle and share real life together makes us act more like one church because we are in relationship together.”
Taking cues from the “In the City For the City” sermon series, Hope Mission is planning to create an artistic display of the Stations of the Cross at a local park during Lent to engage those that might not attend a traditional church service.
