Living as Covenant Men

May 14, 2010

What causes a strapping college football player with a bright future to drive off campus and travel two hours just to spend an hour with someone every day? “I was love sick,” explains Bill Buckley, South Mississippi Region Director for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, “and I would have done anything to be with my wife, even if it was for an hour a day.”

currents 052010 bill buckleyBuckley was the recent guest speaker at the “Living as Covenant Men” retreat for Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Jackson, Mississippi. A decorated wide receiver at Mississippi State turned pro football player, Buckley shared personal stories from his life as a husband, athlete and coach that inspired listeners to live as passionate followers of Christ in all areas of life.

Buckley touched on God’s covenant as personal and intimate like the relationship between a husband and wife, challenged the men to lay down idols that replace Christ and encouraged them to live in the dynamic power of the Holy Spirit instead of going through the motions. During a closing Communion service, the Rev. Keith Allen, rector of Holy Trinity, shared that the “fullest expression of covenant love is Christ’s sacrifice for us”.

“Bill’s stories about his relationship with his wife and getting in the faces of his players with loving but tough honesty resonated with some of the men attending that were having struggles in relationships,” Keith notes. “The gifts of the Holy Spirit were evident as Bill received words of knowledge and discernment to speak into the lives of the men. Everyone walked away with something significant from our time together.”
