Massachusetts Congregation Joins AMiA

On Sunday October 29th, All Saints Anglican of Attleboro was received into the Anglican Mission in The Americas under the episcopal oversight of the Rt. Rev. Thaddeus Barnum. The Anglican Mission in The Americas is a missionary outreach of the Anglican Church of Rwanda, begun with a desire to plant churches and reach out to the un-churched in North America. The Sunday service of reception followed a Saturday meeting of Common Cause partners in the North East.

All Saints began conversation unofficially last May with the Diocese of Massachusetts on the disposition of property and assets. On October 1st, Bishop Shaw received a letter requesting the following two items:

1. That he transfer Fr. Lance Giuffrida’s letters to the Anglican Province of Rwanda without deposition.
2. That the Diocese engage in negotiations for the gift or purchase of the property of All Saints Attleboro.

Precedents for both requests exist both historically and recently in the Episcopal Church. Bishop Shaw of Massachusetts has refused to transfer Fr. Giuffrida’s license. The issue of property has been referred to the Diocesan Standing Committee. All Saints Anglican is prepared to walk away from the property without resorting to legal remedy. In his sermon Sunday, Bishop Barnum challenged the congregation to pay the cost of following Jesus. When asked if they would like to be received into the Anglican Mission, approximately 250 people stood in answer and to reaffirm their faith in Jesus Christ.

These actions have been taken in order to uphold the living faith of the scriptures. We at All Saints acknowledge Jesus Christ as the only Son of God, and that salvation comes through him alone. We believe the Bible to be the Word of God and that it contains all things necessary for salvation. The Gospel challenges and requires us to live an amended and transformed life by the Grace of God. We fulfill this challenge in part by giving back to God in service and tithe what He has blessed us with. We feed the hungry, visit the sick, clothe the naked, and open our home to the community. Most of all, we worship the One True God. Jesus is our Lord and King and we will not be ashamed of His gospel.

All Saints is looking forward to its focus on mission and outreach under the covering of the Anglican Church of Rwanda--a church that is experiencing tremendous growth and vitality, even in the shadow of genocide a decade ago. Our energies will be spent in the call of the Gospel and our response to that call as we move forward.
