Anglican Mission Department of Leadership Development

Preparing leaders for the future is one of the Anglican Mission’s top priorities, and we are committed to strengthening the effectiveness of this core value.
The Rev. H. G. Miller serves as Director of Leadership Development and is responsible for identifying
and recruiting ordained and lay leaders, the Fellows Program, credentialing, deployment and parish based education.
At the beginning of this new millennium, the Anglican Mission is experiencing extraordinary growth through two means. First, there are established, orthodox congregations being welcomed into the AMiA; second, many new churches are being planted. As Anglican Mission churches proliferate, the need for strong, biblical leaders becomes increasingly apparent. In response to this need, the Anglican Mission has developed a process of assessing and equipping both current and future ordained leaders for ministry in our churches. This process is motivated by several key values:
-
This process is meant to be
relational. Our intention is to come alongside, encourage, and release those called to ordained ministry within the Anglican Mission. This process is meant to serve you as you seek to serve Christ and the mission of His Church.
-
This process is intended to be
comprehensive. There are certain core competencies that are essential for ordination to Christian ministry. These include matters of the head (theology and worldview), heart (character, maturity, and faithfulness) and hands (gifts, experience, and fruitfulness). Taking these three together, the process attempts to assess history (spiritual health and growth) in right relation to God.
-
This process is intended to be
flexible. Acquiring the necessary core competencies for ordained Christian ministry must be made possible through a variety of relevant, accessible and affordable means. Life on the missionary frontier requires creativity and innovation. Although this process contains numerous standards by which everyone is held accountable, preparatory programs can be shaped to make use of the best resources available in given situations. As part of that preparation, the Office of Clergy Credentialing and Deployment offers an Anglican Studies Program intended to supplement with Anglican distinctives, a Master’s level education in theology that may be gained outside an Anglican understanding.
-
This process is intended to be
missional. For the sake of reaching those Jesus Christ died to save, and keeping in step with the Spirit, we seek to make our process as expedient as possible while remaining accountable to the standards that have been established. Our primary goal is the extension of God’s kingdom through the local churches of the AMiA.
In view of these criteria, the AMiA has created a process whereby each candidate for ordination is assessed in terms of competency of head, heart, hands, and history for ministry. This plan sets a course for continuing maturation throughout the minister’s lifetime so that those called are prepared and equipped, and so ordained as a natural step in their progress in ministry.
The AMiA Office of Clergy Credentialing and Deployment oversees this process in conjunction with each Mission Network so that the process is characterized simultaneously by both unity and diversity. Ordination to the threefold ministry of deacon (from the New Testament word for servant), priest (from the New Testament word for elder), and bishop (from the New Testament word for overseer), is done by the bishops acting together to discern, approve, receive, and finally bless those God is calling into leadership service in the Church.

Parish-based Training Centers
Several congregations have established programs to provide theological training for the laity and those seeking ordination in a parish-based setting.
Deployment
The goal of clergy deployment in the Anglican Mission is matching the right minister to the right ministry at the right time. The Office of Credentialing and Deployment works with congregations or new ministries to connect their ministry need to clergy who are interested in opportunities within the Anglican Mission. We assist congregations in preparation and distribution of a position description, as well as screening, background checks and a letter of agreement once a call is issued.

Office of Recruiting
The Anglican Mission’s Office of Recruiting focuses on maintaining “a culture of eager expectation for and effective identification of potential ordained and lay leadership for the Anglican Mission”. The Recruiting Coordinator is establishing a presence on seminary and college campuses to introduce the Anglican Mission, its mission and ministry opportunities. He also serves as a liaison, connecting potential new leaders with ministry opportunities within the Anglican Mission.
