The Province of the Anglican Church of Rwanda, rooted in the East African Revival of the 1930s, is dedicated to upholding the faith and practice of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church. In response to an ever-deepening crisis of faith and leadership in both The Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion, the Province of Rwanda courageously intervened in the situation by consecrating the Rev. Chuck Murphy and the Rev. Dr. John Rodgers as missionary bishops in January 2000. Later that year the Anglican Mission was officially launched as a missionary outreach of Rwanda committed to reaching the unchurched n North America.
 In many ways, Rwanda was moved to respond to America because of the pain suffered in the genocide. Archbishop Kolini notes that he could not turn his back on a faithful people who cried out for his help: “When UN Troops were asked to help Rwanda at the time of the genocide, instead of helping, the world abandoned us. I will never do what the world has done to my people.”
We in the Anglican Mission rejoice in the integrity and faithfulness of the Province of Rwanda, celebrating our membership in this global family. Rwanda and the Anglican Mission enjoy a close partnership of mission and ministry fueled by a shared passion and vision for evangelizing the unsaved. Our connection is strong, and we recognize how much we have to learn about forgiveness and reconciliation from the people of Rwanda.

The Province of the Anglican Church of Rwanda includes approximately 1,000,000 members in nine dioceses. The province has 272 congregations with 274 clergy.

 The Province of Rwanda has played a key role in rebuilding the nation following the devastating genocide of 1994, serving as “
a pillar of hope and reconciliation to the millions of Rwandans who were affected.” The Church is still recovering from the wounds of genocide, but Anglican leaders in Rwanda have been instrumental in promoting and implementing forgiveness, reconciliation and unity among the people.
Evangelism has “opened gates for spiritual healing and social development”.
The Anglican leadership in Rwanda is not only involved with addressing the spiritual needs of the nation but is also involved with socio-economic development focused on building a strong, self-sufficient country.
East African Revival
Revival broke out in Rwanda in 1936 at a small Anglican mission station in Gahini (southeast Rwanda) during a time when the country struggled with famine, the negative affects of colonialism as well as corruption in society and government. The church in that time has been described as “lifeless” adrift with moral failure among church leaders. Since the 1920s, missionaries had been praying for God to intervene, and in June 1936, he Lord poured out His Spirit in a dramatic way marked by signs and wonders. The people responded with confession and repentance, profession of faith, joy and tears.
The revival crossed borders into Uganda, Kenya and beyond as well as generations, sweeping through mission schools and spreading to churches and entire communities, transforming lives. Teachers taught new believers the essential of Christian faith, and their emphasis on discipleship under girded the East African Revival which continued for 50 years after its beginning in the 1930s. Though predominantly an Anglican phenomenon, revival also affected other denominations.

Statement on the Creation of the AMiA

The Anglican Mission in the Americas (AMiA) serves as a missionary outreach of the Province of Rwanda, under the authority of the Provincial Synod, The House of Bishops, and the Archbishop of the Province, as stipulated by the Constitution of the Anglican Church of Rwanda.
The Anglican Mission was established in response to what a group of orthodox clergy and leaders from the United States described in 1999 as a severe “crisis of faith and leadership” within the Episcopal Church, USA. Following a series of meetings with concerned Primates in Singapore and Kampala during 1999, and in response to a carefully documented petition for intervention presented by these orthodox leaders from the U.S., the AMiA was created in July of 2000 following passage of a formal resolution in the Rwandan House of Bishops in January of that year calling for the consecration of missionary bishops to be sent to the United States, and to serve in a mission field within that country that presently comprises an estimated 130 million unchurched people.
The Anglican Mission exists to glorify God by sharing and spreading the good news of Jesus Christ in the U.S.A., and by building an alliance of leaders and congregations committed to fulfilling our Lord’s Great Commission by gathering, planting, and serving dynamic churches in the Anglican tradition within that country. As endorsed by both the House of Bishops and the Provincial Synod, this missionary outreach presently enjoys an appropriate level of autonomy due to differences in geographical and cultural setting as provided for by the Constitution of the Province of Rwanda. |
